How to sew a maxi denim skirt from a pair of jeans

Transform an old pair of jeans into a long denim skirt with a nice slit in the front. It’s super easy and quick. All you need is a seam ripper (or scissors), something to draw with, pins, and a sewing machine. If you have an overlock that’s great too, but not necessary.

Use jeans that fit you at the waist, a little too big works too.

I remade my pair of Nudie jeans that had stretched in an unflattering way.

Step 1

This is the only part that is a little time consuming part: Rip the inner seams + the crotch until the zipper in the front, and the belt loop in the back.

Step 2

Fold your jeans inside out with the back pieces together. You’re now going to re-shape the back piece from pants to skirt. Use your marker to draw a line from the lower back to somewhere on your upper thigh. Pin down. See photo.

Reshape the back.

Step 3

Sew a straight stitch along the line.

Step 4

You’re now going to sew the front piece in place. Put one of the leg pieces over the other.
Pin and sew a straight stitch.

Place one of the sides over the other, and let the rest be open.

Step 5

Try the skirt on and see if it fits you. If it’s all good - cut away the excess part in the back and finish off the front seams with a straight stitch where it was originally stitched. Overlock the back seam if you have an overlock machine.

Step 6

Done!
